Midtown

Here no two homes are alike and many residents complement their home’s historic architecture with beautiful gardens and landscaping.

Welcome to Midtown

Midtown Memphis is a vibrant and diverse collection of neighborhoods located in the heart of the city. Known for its proximity to Downtown, historic architecture, and lively atmosphere and amenities, Midtown is a popular area for residents and tourists alike.

Midtown neighborhoods include Central Gardens, Cooper-Young, Evergreen Historic District, Vollintine-Evergreen, Overton Square, and Crosstown; each has its unique character and attractions.

One of the defining features of Midtown is its historic architecture. The area was largely developed from the late 1880s to the 1930s and is home to a wide variety of architectural styles, ranging from grand Victorian mansions to American four squares to Craftsman bungalows. (I lived in a bungalow in Evergreen and it was there my love and appreciation for old homes began).

Overton Park, the crown jewel of Midtown, is a hub of activity. It is home to the world-renowned Memphis Zoo, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, a golf course, walking trails through old growth forest, dog parks, and the Overton Park Shell (formerly known as the Levitt Shell) an outdoor amphitheater that hosts free concerts and events year-round.

Located to the park’s south is Central Gardens, arguably the finest historic neighborhood in Memphis. Here no two homes are alike and many residents complement their home’s historic architecture with beautiful gardens and landscaping. Just south of Central Gardens, across Central Avenue, the Cooper-Young Historic District is a lively and trendy area with eclectic shops and restaurants. Cooper-Young is known for its vibrant arts scene and hosts the Cooper-Young Festival, one of Memphis' largest annual street festivals, and other community events year-round.

Overton Square, another popular spot in Midtown, offers a mix of entertainment venues, restaurants, and shops. It has experienced significant revitalization in recent years, attracting both locals and tourists looking for a vibrant nightlife experience. Billy Joel played at Lafayette’s on the Square before FedEx Forum was built.

Crosstown Concourse, a massive former Sears distribution center, has been transformed into a mixed-use development that houses apartments, offices, restaurants, retail spaces even a YMCA with an outdoor pool. It serves as a community hub and has become a symbol of Memphis’ revitalization efforts.

Overall, Midtown offers a dynamic blend of history, culture, and entertainment. It is an area that embraces diversity and fosters a strong sense of community, making it a beloved and vibrant part of Bluff City.
